Matt's Rise of the Runelords

Random notes for the start of the game.

While the world has it’s own calendar, I will probably just use the real world equivalents for months and days because I have enough trouble keeping myself up with it, much less everyone else.

ICly the game will be starting in the year 4708 AR (Absalom Reckoning), the second week of October (Lamashan). Everyone will be in Sandpoint for the Swallowtail festival, which occurs on the Autumnal Equinox. This year’s festival is also coinciding with the consecration of the new Sandpoint Cathedral, a multi-god temple. Everyone needs to be either from the town, or there on some business that would leave them fee to partake in adventuring… cause you know, that is what the game is about.

In the winter of 4702 Sandpoint was the home of “The Chopper”, a serial killer who killed 25 people over the course of a month. Eventually revealed to be a local eccentric, Jervis Stoot, the crimes put a strain on the community that while no stranger to crime and death, had never witnessed anytime so gruesome as bodies carved up and their eyes and tongues stolen away. While he was cornered and died at his own hands, the tragedies of that year did not end there as a month later the old church burned to the ground taking the village priest with it. This time is referred to as “the late unpleasantness” by those villagers wishing to put the past behind them.

A bit of setting blather

The world of Golarion is one of moderate to high fantasy. Ancient empires have risen and fallen. Nations have been reduced to magic suffused plains of ash. Rifts to hell have opened and allow demons to walk the lands. A nation is encased in eternal bitter winter. And yet, few heroes have risen to the call. Here and there power beings have made their way with sword and magic, but figures of immense power out for the betterment of the world are few and far between. There are legends to make, treasures to be found, and battles to be won.

The continent of Avistan, forming the northern frame of the Inner sea region, holds the ruins of the lost Thassilon empire which flourished nearly 10,000 years ago. The once powerful nations of Cheliax and Taldor slide slowly into rot, one allied with demonic forces the other merely collapsing under the weight of it’s decadence and short sightedness.

Modern Varisia, the region that Thassilon once covered with civilization and learning, is now a rugged frontier land. The barbarous Shoanti (show AHN tee) and nomadic Varisian (vah RHIS ee ann)have no central government so the largely untamed lands are largely under control of whoever can project their force of arms across them. While small towns and villages dot the lands, wild animals and worse make travel a risky proposition for the ill prepared. There are, however, a few notable exceptions. The city-state of Korvosa, in the Southeast edge of these lands, clings to both it’s own monarchy and it’s ties to Cheliax. Magnimar, located on the mid point of the coast if not the land itself, is the second largest of the city-states and currently sees it’s fortunes in ascendance. In the northern reaches of the land Riddleport, the smallest and last of the notable city-states, is a chaotic place where strength of arms will serve you better than a reliance on the “law” as it’s dictated by the crime lords who rule here.

The town of Sandpoint lies some 40 to 50 miles Northeast of Magnimar along the coast of the Varisian Gulf. It pays allegiance to that city-state, and owes some of it’s survival to their support.

CharGen Session

Ailis Tapley Half-elf Rogue: Hailing from the town of Riddleport. Daughter of a human tavern keep and an elven ne’er do well. Left town after getting into a bit of trouble back home. Trade roads led her down to Sandpoint, and the swelling festival population made a good place to loose herself in anonymity.

Tekal Wind-Blown Human Barbarian: Shoanti of the Tamiir-Quah (Wind Clan). Is on the walkabout portion of his life where he’s left his tribe to wander and make an expeirenced warrior out of himself. Generally this involves getting into trouble and being rowdy. Does have a sense of loyalty to friends.

Etina Jewelfist Human Monk: Vudrani, hails from the city of Padiskar on the isle of Jalmeray. Has traveled to Sandpoint to check on a student from her dojo, who is reported to be working for one of the local luminaries as a bodyguard.

Kajsa Bramblington Gnome Druid: From the Sanos forest. Has a Stormroc companion (basically a recolored eagle). Has traveled to Sandpoint to witness the harvest festival.

Session 1 Summary

Stuff: 5gps, (masterwork) goblin horsechopper XP: 450xp

Festival

Goblin kills dog, others come out start fire, cause mayhem. Party kills them. Attempts to put out/move fiery wagon more goblins show up with a warchanter. Fighting, Father Zantus is slightly injured, again party kills them all. Screams from the north, goblins killing a dog and closing in on a noble looking fellow (Aldern Foxglove). Party surprises and kills them… and their little dog too.

Aldern invite them to come boar hunting, posits potential reward.

Captured goblin. “Longshanks” wanted to come to the cemetery for something.

Broken mausoleum, stolen body.

Aftermath: At first everyone is rather shocked and horrified. Somber and scared. As the night wears on later, and folk drink more, it becomes something of a morbid joke. The goblins pure insanity and strange behavior become the but of jokes and funny stories. Humor starts to put a fuzzy haze over the horror.

Garridan Viskalai, owner of “The White Deer” (the inn that Aldern was cornered in front of) offers the 4 party members a couple of rooms and a free meal for their involvement with keeping the Father safe, and for killing those goblins before they could do any harm to his place. Tekal will note that a number of the decoration in the inn are of Shoanti design, specifically pointing towards the shriikirri-quah (Hawk Clan).

Session 2 Summary
You've got ruins here?

Stuff: The town is covering rooms and food at the Rusty Dragon Inn for the groups stay in town. 450xp.

Hagfish. Agatha is 2sps richer after the contest.

Find some info about the chopper. Stoot the carver, was simple and “released the birds” in the things he carved. Killed 25 people, including the old sheriff.

Went to investigate the cemetery. Climbed wall. Wandered over the countryside, but lost the goblin trails after they split up. Went back to check in with sheriff who had asked for them to see him.

Sheriff asks them to “stick around town and be seen” while he goes to get some troops from Magnimar. Expects it to not be more than a 3 or 4 day thing.

Search around town. Ask a local sage when the street cleaner will be home… and if there are ruins nearby. After revealing the terribly secret ruins that loom over his house at the end of the street he also reveals his study of Thassilonian ruins. (Thassilon being an ancient empire that once dominated the northern continent known for it’s rune magic)

Entry 1
The raid went about as planned. Few Thistletop goblins perished, and we were able to secure Tobyn’s casket with ease while the rubes were distracted by the rest. I can’t wait until the real raid. This town deserves a burning, that’s for sure.
Entry 2
Ripnugget seems to favor the overwhelming land approach, but I don’t think it’s the best plan. We should get the quasit’s aid. Send her freaks up from below via the smuggling tunnel in my father’s glassworks, then invade from the river and from the glassworks in smaller but focused strikes. The rest except Bruthazmus agree, and I’m pretty sure the bugbear’s just being contrary to annoy me. My love’s too distracted with the lower chambers to make a decision. Says once Malfeshnekor’s released and under her command we won’t need to worry about being subtle. I hope she’s right.
Entry 3
My love seems bent on going through with it – nothing I can say convinces her of her beauty. She remains obsessed with removing what she calls her “celestial taint” and replacing it with her Mother’s grace. Burning her father’s remains at the Thistletop shrine seems to have started the transformation, but I can’t say her new hand is pleasing to me. Hopefully when she offers Sandpoint to Lamshtu’s fires, her new body won’t be as hideous. Maybe I’ll luck out. Succubi are demons too, aren’t they?

I am going to presume that you will be able to identify the wand in the next bit of down time so I’m just giving you the info on it now.

Speak to Father Zantus and the sage regarding all the group has seen. Book is written in Thassalonian (and abyssal, but those are the notes in the margins). The journal itself is sort of a prayer book to Lamatashu, a mix of ritual and bestiary. The notes provide snap shots into the quaist’s (presumably) decent into madness, coupled with her increasingly devote worship of Lamatashu.

A slackers update 2/20

Right, so… been terribly slacky about updating this stuff. Hell and intentions and all that…

Stuff: 2 potions of cure light wounds, potion of speak with animal, 2 potions of tree shape, +1 leather armor(small sized), cloak of resistance +1, wand of produce flame (34)

Help Father Zantus destroy the temple area. Interrogate Tetsuo ineffectually. Fake caravan, capture goblin. Interrogate goblin. Thistletop information. Expore the area near Thistletop. Incite confusion and conflict between the Thistletop goblins and refuges from the Birdcrusher tribe. Kill sub boss in the Thistlewood camp. Drive off(kill) Bunyip that resides in the “Howling Cave”. Confuse goblin guards, incite a melee, kill more goblins, charge across bridge which collapses and dumps them into the water. Return, chop down bridge (ha!) and then flee to hide out. Return in the middle of the night while the goblins are trying to fix their bridge, lite it on fire and climb into the tentacle cave of doooom.
